Fire crews are reporting significant progress in tackling a wildfire in the Cairngorms, a vast mountainous region. More than 100 firefighters have been involved in the operation since Saturday morning, working to extinguish a blaze that had spread across an area of about six square kilometers.

Helicopters have been deployed, scooping water and dropping it onto affected areas. Fire service officials described the ongoing effort as a "protracted effort" undertaken in difficult conditions. The terrain is characterized as treacherous, at times inaccessible, and poses significant danger.

Despite these challenges, firefighting work that began around 4:30 a.m. on Saturday has begun to yield positive results. "The conditions have been very, very favourable, which has allowed us to really start to attack the fire in earnest and continue to contain it," said Jon Henderson, assistant chief officer for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS). While expressing optimism about the current situation, Henderson cautioned that conditions can change rapidly, emphasizing the ongoing need for vigilance when dealing with a mountain range fire.
