A fire at Shiregreen Working Men's Club in Sheffield, which gained fame through the 1997 film "The Full Monty," is believed to have been started deliberately. The incident occurred just before 4:45 p.m. BST on Sunday, according to South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service.
Eight fire engines and a turntable ladder were dispatched to the scene. No injuries were reported. Fire crews departed the location shortly after midnight and were scheduled to return to check for any remaining hotspots. The building has been closed and fallen into disrepair since 2019. It was also the site of a deliberate fire last year.
A spokesperson for the fire service confirmed that the latest incident is also considered to have been deliberately set. In 2020, Sheffield City Council denied an application to demolish the building after a petition to save it garnered over 1,000 signatures. Ann Bentley, who spearheaded the petition and had worked at the club for 15 years, expressed devastation at the news of another fire. She described the club as having held significant personal meaning for her, having met her husband there, and stated her sadness at its current state, wishing it could be revitalized.
