A 600-foot ferry carrying approximately 100 passengers collided head-on with a cargo ship in the port of Souda, Crete, on Tuesday. Footage of the incident shows the two vessels approaching each other before the ferry's bow impacted the cargo ship's port side.
The ferry, identified as Elyros by local media, was transporting 100 passengers, 32 cars, and 74 trucks. The cargo ship, named Iosif K., was carrying 84 trucks. Fortunately, no injuries were reported among the passengers or crew.
Both vessels have been grounded at the port pending an investigation into the collision. Marine authorities will inspect the ships and require a seaworthiness certificate before either is permitted to sail again.
The incident occurred as a separate investigation is underway concerning the death of a 79-year-old British tourist found unresponsive on a cruise ship off the coast of Crete last week. That vessel was diverted to dock on the Greek island, and the Chania Port Authority has ordered an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
