Andreas Loizou, a 54-year-old father of two, has been identified as the worker killed in a tragic accident at the Peak Downs mine near Moranbah, Queensland, on July 24. The incident occurred when a haul truck collided with a light vehicle on an access road.

Mr. Loizou, originally from Emerald in Central Queensland, had a career spanning more than two decades in the mining industry. He is remembered by his family as a "kind-hearted larrikin" who prioritized others. His brother, Vasili, described him as the "best big brother," noting his nurturing and loving nature, and his dedication to visiting their elderly mother after long shifts.

In a statement, Mr. Loizou's family expressed gratitude for the widespread support they have received. They highlighted his role as a loving partner, father, grandfather, son, brother, and a highly respected colleague.

Two fundraisers have been established to support Mr. Loizou's family. One aims to assist his children, Jacob and Sophie, to help them navigate their grief. A separate fundraiser, organized by Miners' Promise, a charity for grieving mining families, has also been set up to provide support.

The accident marks the third fatal mining incident in Central Queensland in 2026. Stephen Smyth, an industry safety and health representative for the Queensland Mining and Energy Union, stated that the industry "has to do better" to ensure workers can return home safely.

A second mine worker sustained injuries in the collision and was transported to Moranbah Hospital in a serious but stable condition, suffering from chest and leg injuries.
