A father left his 7-year-old son unattended on Japan's Mt. Fuji after the child complained of fatigue during a hike, authorities reported. The incident prompted police intervention due to the dangerous weather and altitude.
The boy was found by a mountain hut worker around 7:40 a.m. local time, sitting alone and appearing exhausted. The worker contacted the police, who then located the father and his older son. According to reports, the father had instructed his younger son to wait at a station approximately 8,000 feet above sea level while he and the elder son continued onward. At the time the boy was left, fog and rain were reportedly beginning to set in.
Police officials reunited the boy with his family and admonished the father for endangering the child. The combination of inclement weather, fatigue, and potential altitude sickness posed significant risks, even for experienced hikers. The father reportedly expressed deep regret for his decision, stating, "I made a rash decision, and I deeply regret it."
The boy was returned to his father unharmed. Local authorities emphasized the importance of the buddy system, especially when hiking with children.
Mt. Fuji, Japan's tallest peak, is a popular but challenging hiking destination, known for its steep trails and unpredictable weather conditions. Hikers often face fatigue and altitude sickness as they ascend. In 2024, three bodies were discovered inside a crater at the summit of the mountain.
