At least two people were killed and 58 others injured Friday afternoon when an explosion occurred at a military barracks in Viacha, Bolivia. Authorities fear the death toll could be higher as emergency workers search through rubble.
The blast, which involved "pyrotechnic material," detonated at approximately 2:30 p.m. local time at a barracks housing an artillery regiment. The incident took place in Viacha, located about 30 kilometers (19 miles) from the capital, La Paz.
Between 10 and 15 fatalities are believed to have occurred, according to health officials. Dozens of nearby homes sustained damage, primarily broken windows. The cause of the explosion is under investigation, though police indicated fireworks were stored at the barracks.
Officials have warned the public to stay at least 150 meters away from the military base due to the risk of further explosions. The authorities in Viacha have declared three days of mourning for the victims.
