Karl Bushby received a hero's welcome upon his return to Hull this week, completing a 31,000-mile walk around the world that began 28 years ago. However, his ex-wife, Angela Bushby, has shared her perspective on the epic journey, highlighting the significant personal toll it took on her and their son, Adam.
While Bushby traversed continents, Angela Bushby was solely responsible for raising their son. She described the experience of being a single parent for nearly three decades as having to "learn to do everything myself." She stated that while she couldn't blame Karl for pursuing his dream, his absence meant she shouldered the full responsibility of their child's upbringing.
Angela and Karl were married in Holywood, County Down, with their son Adam already in his father's arms. Karl Bushby was stationed in Northern Ireland at the time, working at Palace Barracks, where Angela was employed. The couple later separated as Karl embarked on his ambitious walk.
Despite the challenges, Angela expressed pride in their son, noting that he grew into a "decent, happy and well-adjusted son." She maintained a positive outlook, stating she "can’t blame Karl for wanting to follow his dream and do what he wants to do." Her reflections offer a poignant counterpoint to the widely celebrated adventurer's return, emphasizing the often-unseen sacrifices made by those left behind during long-term expeditions.
