Travelers planning European getaways this summer may encounter significant flight delays, particularly at popular Mediterranean destinations. A recent study by AirAdvisor has identified European airports with the highest rates of flights delayed by over an hour, with several locations in Spain, Greece, and Italy dominating the list.

Milan Bergamo International Airport in Italy ranked as the worst for delays to and from the UK last summer. Between June and September 2025, 11.96 percent of its flights were delayed by more than 60 minutes. The airport, which served 4.8 million passengers between June and August last year, experienced disruptions in January due to technical issues and fog. Additionally, the implementation of the new Entry/Exit System (EES) has impacted operations, leading to incidents where passengers missed flights due to passport control delays, as reported by Ryanair.

Nice Cote d'Azur Airport in France followed, with 11.92 percent of its flights to and from the UK experiencing delays exceeding 60 minutes last summer. This hub was involved in an operational breakdown on June 19 that affected other airports and resulted in over 300 delays across the affected airports.

Kefalonia International Airport in Greece placed third, with 11.79 percent of its flights delayed by more than an hour. Anton Radchenko, CEO of AirAdvisor, noted that Greece is a frequent source of disruption for UK air passengers. He explained that many Greek island airports are smaller and operate at maximum capacity during peak seasons, leading to cascading delays when disruptions occur.

Other airports in the top five include Pisa International Airport in Italy, which reported 10.58 percent of its flights delayed, and Corfu Airport in Greece, with 9.54 percent of flights delayed by over an hour.

Spanish destinations also feature prominently in the list of delayed airports. Palma de Mallorca Airport ranked sixth with 9.33 percent of flights delayed, and Reus Airport was seventh with 9.13 percent. AirAdvisor data indicated that Palma de Mallorca's delay rate doubled from 3.66 percent to 7.6 percent over a year. Delays at Palma de Mallorca on June 9 were attributed to wind, impacting 364 flights.

Rounding out the top ten are Ponta Delgada Airport in Portugal (8.08 percent of flights delayed), Olbia Costa Smeralda Airport in Sardinia (8.71 percent), and Zadar Airport in Croatia (8.65 percent).

The study examined flights to and from the UK between June and September 2025. According to the findings, popular holiday spots like Ibiza, Alicante, and Rhodes also made the top 20 list of airports most likely to experience significant delays.
