Dozens of U.S. and Canadian citizens are among hundreds of people missing after flash floods and mudslides swept through northern Nepal, near the border with Tibet. Authorities reported that more than 150 people have died in the disaster.

The U.S. State Department confirmed it is aware that Americans were affected by the floods that occurred Wednesday. The U.S. embassy in Nepal is collaborating with local tour operators and officials to provide assistance to those impacted.

Canadian foreign affairs also stated they are monitoring the situation and are prepared to offer support. According to Nepal police, 579 tourists are currently missing. Of these, 466 are foreign nationals from 28 countries. These figures include 54 individuals from the United States, over 100 from India, 33 from the United Kingdom, and more than 100 from Nepal. A spokesperson for the Nepal Tourist Board indicated that an additional 24 Canadians are also unaccounted for. The State Department cited privacy concerns for not releasing specific numbers or further details about the affected Americans.
