Emergency crews continued to search through rubble on Thursday for survivors after two powerful earthquakes struck Venezuela on Wednesday evening, causing widespread damage and fatalities. Acting President Delcy Rodriguez declared a state of emergency, stating that the quakes had transformed at least one area, the state of La Guaira, into a "disaster zone."
Rodriguez reported that dozens of buildings collapsed in La Guaira, located approximately 30 kilometers north of the capital, Caracas. Intensive rescue operations were underway to save lives. Severe damage was also reported in Caracas and other regions following the seismic activity.
Her office has received preliminary reports of at least 32 deaths and more than 700 injuries. The twin earthquakes hit on Wednesday evening, prompting immediate emergency responses.
