A baby dolphin reportedly died on a beach in Ceuta after being pulled from the water and allegedly struck by individuals described as illegal migrants. The incident occurred near the shoreline at Trampolin Beach on Wednesday, September 2, 2026.
Witnesses and local media reported that the dolphin calf was swimming close to the shore before being removed from the water. An Ecoservicios cleaning worker intervened, warning the group not to handle or strike the animal and to contact an appropriate service. During the confrontation, locals argued with the group, with one person heard telling them it was illegal to touch or consume the dolphin.
Footage of the event shows individuals holding the dolphin calf aloft, which an online petition described as displaying the "lifeless body as if it were a trophy." The petition, launched by Nadia Garcia Gomez, calls for the identification and prosecution of those involved, citing Spanish and European laws that protect dolphins as a strictly protected species.
"This act of extreme and unjustifiable cruelty cannot go unpunished," Garcia Gomez stated in her petition. She urged the Government Delegation in Ceuta, the Department of the Environment, and SEPRONA (the Civil Guard's environmental protection unit) to act with urgency and apply maximum penalties for animal abuse resulting in death.
The incident occurred amidst a larger context of migration in Ceuta, a Spanish North African enclave. Thousands of individuals swam into the territory late last month, and thousands reportedly remained, many sleeping rough due to a lack of space in holding centers. This influx has led to significant public attention and protests, with tens of thousands demonstrating across Spain in support of Ceuta and in protest of the government's handling of the situation.
Earlier in the week, reports emerged of other incidents in Ceuta, including a Spanish woman arrested for allegedly stabbing a man believed to be an undocumented Moroccan migrant inside her home, and prosecutors revealing reports of 23 alleged sexual assaults, including five rapes, since the mass border breach.
While the exact intentions of the individuals involved with the dolphin were not immediately clear, some migrants reportedly signaled the mammal was dead and one appeared to attempt to return it to the water. The final disposition of the dolphin's body was not immediately clear. The incident has drawn widespread condemnation and calls for legal action.
