Authorities in Laos have charged the owner of a distillery in connection with a mass methanol poisoning incident that claimed the lives of two Australian teenagers and four other individuals in November 2024. The charges, confirmed by Danish officials, include selling food harmful to health and operating an illegal business.

The victims, 19-year-old Melbourne residents Bianca Jones and Holly Morton-Bowles, fell critically ill after staying at the Nana Backpackers Hostel in Vang Vieng. The incident also led to the deaths of two Danish women, an American man, and a British woman.

Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen expressed disappointment with the indictment, stating it did not fully reflect the gravity of the tragedy. He acknowledged the challenges in meeting the burden of proof for more severe charges but found the current indictment lenient. "All up, our daughter, along with four other beautiful women, their lives are worth less than a year and about $1,600," said Mark Jones, Bianca's father, expressing disgust and anger over the potential penalties.

The accused faces a prison sentence ranging from three months to four years and a fine if convicted. The Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs indicated that it would work with affected families and countries to determine next steps.

The development has drawn strong reactions from the Australian government. Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong described the situation as "deeply frustrating" and confirmed that Australia had summoned Laos' ambassador to Canberra. She stated that the charges should align with the seriousness of the events and that Prime Minister Anthony Albanese was also conveying these expectations to Lao counterparts.

Australia has consistently advocated for a thorough and transparent investigation into the incident, seeking accountability for those responsible. Australian diplomat Pablo Kang has been engaged with Lao authorities to advance the case and is expected to travel to Laos to convey the government's objections and expectations for a just resolution.
