A HungryPanda delivery driver was fatally stabbed in Melbourne's central business district on Friday evening while collecting a food order. Emergency services responded to Fredrick Way around 8:10 p.m. after the man, identified as a father of two whose children live in China, was found with suspected stab wounds. He was declared dead at the scene despite resuscitation attempts.
Shortly after, a second man, in his 30s, was found nearby with a suspected stab wound and was transported to the hospital. Police are investigating whether the incident was targeted. No arrests have been made.
Witnesses described the harrowing scene, with footage circulating on social media showing the victim collapsing against a restaurant wall as another person attempted to provide aid and called for an ambulance. One witness, who knew the victim and had received deliveries from him, expressed shock, stating, "I thought Australia was a wealthy, developed country. This is something I never expected."
HungryPanda issued a statement expressing deep sadness over the "tragic incident" and offered condolences to the victim's family. The company stated it has formed a response team to provide necessary assistance and support to the family, and is offering guidance to its rider community.
Concerns about safety among delivery workers have been highlighted by a recent survey conducted by law firm Slater and Gordon. The survey of 250 delivery riders and drivers found that 65% are concerned about their safety while working. Half of the respondents expressed worry about potential assaults, with 34% concerned while in their vehicles and 25% while at pickup or delivery locations. Among motorcycle riders, 52% reported concerns about assaults during pickups or drop-offs.
Homicide Squad detectives are leading the investigation, with cordons established between Queen Street and A'Beckett Street. Police are appealing for anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers.
