Couple Receives 100 Lashes Each for Adultery in Indonesian Province

A couple in Banda Aceh, Indonesia, has been subjected to 100 lashes each as punishment for adultery, adhering to the province's stringent Sharia laws. The public caning, which took place on Thursday, saw the woman exhibiting signs of extreme distress, pleading for mercy before collapsing from the pain.

The couple had been convicted of adultery by the Banda Aceh Sharia Court the previous month and sentenced to the severe penalty. Aceh is the only province in Muslim-majority Indonesia that enforces Sharia law, which prohibits sexual relations for unmarried couples and punishes a range of offenses including gambling, alcohol consumption, homosexual acts, and extramarital affairs.

Eyewitness accounts and images from the event depicted the woman grimacing and holding her hand up in agony as the lashes were administered to her back. Subsequent photographs showed her being assisted from the ground after collapsing onto her knees. Her partner also appeared to wince in pain during his caning.

According to local news reports, the man's caning was temporarily halted after 60 lashes due to concerns about his health. Darma Mustika, head of the General Crimes Section of the Banda Aceh District Attorney's Office, stated that the break was given to allow him rest. The caning eventually resumed to complete the full sentence of 100 lashes.

The couple was part of a larger group of 10 individuals who received canings on Thursday. The remaining eight convicts, both men and women, were sentenced to between 16 and 21 lashes for the offense of intermingling at a birthday party, an act strictly forbidden under Sharia law for unrelated men and women.

The public nature of these canings in Aceh is designed to inflict both physical pain and public humiliation on those found to have violated Sharia law. These punishments are often carried out in public spaces, such as outside mosques or in community squares, with crowds frequently observing and recording the proceedings.

Human rights organizations, including Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, have repeatedly condemned the practice. They argue that caning violates Indonesia's constitution and international human rights obligations, describing it as a cruel, inhuman, and degrading punishment that can amount to torture.

Local officials, however, defend the practice as a deterrent and an integral part of the province's cultural and religious identity. Critics counter that these punishments damage Indonesia's human rights standing and inflict lasting psychological trauma on the individuals subjected to them.

This incident follows a recent case where a woman was publicly caned for allegedly committing obscenity live on social media, accused of kissing her partner during a TikTok livestream. She too reportedly lost consciousness and required medical attention following her punishment.
