A significant cold front is sweeping across southeastern Australia, bringing a sharp drop in temperatures, strong winds, and the possibility of snow to several states. Millions of residents are experiencing a dramatic shift from unseasonably warm weather to winter-like conditions.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued gale warnings for the East Gippsland coast of Victoria and the west coast of Tasmania due to the expected strong winds. The icy change will affect Victoria, New South Wales, the Australian Capital Territory, and Tasmania, with temperatures plummeting after some areas reached the mid-20s last week.

Hobart is forecast to see a maximum temperature of just 12C on Tuesday, while Melbourne will experience a high of 13C on Wednesday. Sydney is expected to reach a maximum of 18C on Wednesday, with Canberra anticipating a high of 13C. Canberra is bracing for a frosty start to Thursday, with temperatures predicted to fall to a minimum of -1C, while Sydney's low will be around 10C.

Light snowfalls are anticipated in Victoria's high country and southern New South Wales, with snow levels forecast to be as low as 800 meters above sea level. However, these snowfalls are unlikely to significantly benefit ski resorts, as only Perisher in New South Wales remains open.

Meanwhile, Western Australia is experiencing different weather patterns. Perth is set for warmer conditions, with temperatures reaching 30C on Wednesday. However, showers are expected to develop by Friday, with possible thunderstorms occurring between Monday and Wednesday across various parts of the state, including the Interior, Pilbara, Gascoyne, and western and southern regions. Some of these storms could become severe.

Meteorologists note that these temperature fluctuations and widespread thunderstorms are characteristic of the spring season in Western Australia.
