George and Amal Clooney have evacuated their home in Brignoles, southern France, as wildfires spread across Europe, according to reports. A representative for the couple confirmed the evacuation to People magazine, sharing a letter they sent to Brignoles Mayor Didier Brémond.
"At this point we have no idea whether our beautiful home makes it through this terrible moment," the letter stated. "As we evacuate Brignoles we want to emphasise 2 things, first we hope you and the people of our city are safe and second that Amal and i are committed to making sure that whatever happens to our village, we are part of this community and we’ll be part of making it whole. We love Brignoles and our friends who live there."
The evacuation comes as wildfires continue to scorch southern Europe, forcing widespread displacement. In France, an uncontained wildfire in the Gironde region, described as roughly four times the size of Paris, prompted the evacuation of approximately 220,000 residents and vacationers at its peak. While many have since returned, tens of thousands remain displaced.
Elsewhere in Europe, Spain has declared a national emergency due to the fires, with more than 300,000 people having been forced to evacuate across both France and Spain. In Greece, three firefighters have died battling blazes amid extreme heat, drought, and strong winds.
The Clooneys, who have made their home in France to provide a quieter upbringing for their twins, have been part of the Brignoles community. George Clooney has previously spoken about choosing France for their family life, emphasizing a desire for their children to have a life away from the pressures of Hollywood fame.
The fires have also impacted France's famed Bordeaux wine region, and the military has been deployed to assist in firefighting efforts. The Tour de France route was also shortened due to the extreme conditions.
