Dramatic footage of flash floods that tore through the main border crossing between Nepal and Tibet has been widely circulated internationally, yet it remains largely inaccessible on China's heavily censored internet.
Hundreds of people are feared dead and thousands remain missing as a major rescue operation continues into the weekend. On Saturday, Chinese state media broadcast videos of rescue teams working through mud and debris, but offered little visual documentation of the floods themselves or accounts from survivors and affected families.
Tibet is a highly sensitive region for China, having been annexed in the 1950s. The region has a history of demanding greater autonomy and is one of China's most strictly controlled areas, with access for foreign media severely restricted.
