A Porter Airlines flight bound for Toronto was canceled and passengers rebooked after a young child refused to wear a seat belt, leading to the plane returning to the terminal. The incident, which occurred on August 6 as the flight prepared to depart from Victoria, resulted in the flight being unable to depart before the runway's midnight closure.
The airline stated that attempts by the accompanying parent and crew to secure the child were unsuccessful. "The aircraft could not takeoff in this unsafe condition, so the crew elected to return to the terminal and have the two passengers disembark," Porter Airlines said.
Child aviation safety expert Lia Tuso commented that the crew's decision was to protect the safety of all passengers, including the child, as unrestrained individuals can become projectiles during turbulence, particularly during takeoff and landing. This viewpoint aligns with standard aviation safety protocols.
The incident has spurred a debate online regarding the balance between airline tolerance for traveling families and parental enforcement of safety rules. Some commenters suggested the situation reflected overly permissive parenting, while others noted that children can sometimes be fearful of flying and not intentionally disruptive.
One passenger on the affected flight, Aryeh Kozuch, reported that the child appeared scared and had been sliding out from under the seat when attempts were made to strap them in. This account contrasts with broader online discussions that sometimes generalize such incidents as willful defiance.
Similar incidents have led to passenger removals in the past. In 2018, a father and daughter were removed from a Southwest Airlines flight after a dispute with the crew, which began during a child's tantrum but reportedly resolved before their ejection. Southwest Airlines stated that initial reports indicated an escalated conversation between the crew and the customer. In another 2012 incident, a family removed from a JetBlue flight accused the airline of lacking humanity after they reportedly did not comply with crew instructions for a prolonged period, leading the captain to remove them for the safety of others on board.
