Ciara Corvan, a 28-year-old senior nursing assistant, has been sentenced to two years probation and 100 hours of community service for taking and sharing videos of patients with advanced dementia. The incidents occurred in 2023 while Corvan was employed at the Bluestone Unit of Craigavon Area Hospital in Northern Ireland.
Corvan pleaded guilty in May to seven charges related to the ill-treatment of four patients under the Mental Health Order (NI) 1986. The court heard that the videos included footage of a patient in the bath, another in bed, and one where Corvan's face was positioned close to a patient's. Some of the comments made in the videos were deemed offensive.
Colleagues reported Corvan's behavior, leading to the charges. During the sentencing, Judge Patrick McGurgan described the actions as a "serious breach of trust," emphasizing that families entrust caregivers with the dignity and respect of their loved ones. He stated that the offending was demeaning and that the public needs confidence in its caregivers.
