Fire crews have largely contained a significant wildfire in Scotland's Cairngorms National Park, leading to cautious optimism among authorities. A high-volume pump has been utilized to draw water from Loch Morlich, aiding firefighting operations.
The Cairngorms National Park Authority (CNPA) reported on Sunday that there was "growing optimism that the heroic efforts of people on the ground to tackle the wildfire are working." However, they emphasized that the incident remained active, and roadblocks would persist until the firefighting operation was fully completed.
As a safety measure, homes and businesses, including campsites and a ski resort within Glenmore Forest Park, had been evacuated. On Sunday, residents and campers were permitted to return to the affected areas to retrieve personal belongings. The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) confirmed that six appliances and specialized resources, such as all-terrain vehicles, remained on the scene.
Videos from Saturday's response showed helicopters engaged in water-bombing operations over the affected areas. The public has been advised to avoid the Glenmore, Abernethy, Loch Morlich, and surrounding areas while the operation continues.
