A British tourist is fighting for his life after sustaining a severe brain injury in a quad bike crash in Greece. Bradley Belhomme, 20, is currently on life support in an Athens hospital following the incident. His family has launched an urgent fundraising appeal to cover medical expenses and travel costs to bring him back to the UK.
A GoFundMe page established by a family member states that Belhomme suffered a serious brain injury after a collision while on holiday with friends. The appeal has garnered significant support, raising over £20,800 towards a £26,000 target.
This incident follows a similar accident last month involving 18-year-old Alfie Moses, who sustained serious spinal injuries after crashing a quad bike in Zante. Moses was airlifted to a hospital in Athens after suffering 12 fractured vertebrae, 11 broken ribs, a brain bleed, a punctured lung, a ruptured spleen, and a broken shoulder. His family faces a potential £17,000 medical bill, with uncertainty about insurance coverage as quad bikes are reportedly excluded from their policy.
Alfie's mother, Kayley Posnett, described the crash, stating her son nearly died after hitting a raised road edge at approximately 50 mph. She has spoken out about concerns regarding quad bike rental safety standards in Greece, suggesting that young tourists are easily offered these machines at low prices, posing significant danger. Posnett indicated that Alfie chose a quad bike priced at 50 euros after being quoted 150 euros elsewhere, highlighting a potential price-driven decision-making process that disregards safety.
She further commented on the handling of the vehicles, noting that young adults may not fully comprehend the dangers of operating such powerful machines on foreign roads. "They don't tell them that they don't steer well. You can't control them well. They do 70 miles an hour," Posnett stated.
