A 17-year-old British boy has drowned in Lake Cauma near Flims, in eastern Switzerland, while on holiday with his family. The incident occurred on Thursday evening when the teenager got into difficulty around 5:45 p.m. local time as he attempted to swim to shore from an island in the middle of the lake.
Bystanders in canoes rushed to his aid and brought him back to shore, where paramedics who were already present at the lake began resuscitation efforts. The boy was subsequently transported to Chur Cantonal Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries later that evening.
Local police are currently investigating the exact circumstances surrounding the drowning. This incident follows a similar tragedy in May, when an NHS doctor died from injuries sustained in a cycling accident during a holiday in Switzerland.
