A British-German man has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of his wife, who he claimed fell to her death from a hotel balcony during sex. Christian M., 60, was jailed in late July after prosecutors presented evidence suggesting he intended to kill his wife, Marta, 40, to begin a new life with a mistress.

Marta died on May 18, 2023, after falling approximately 200 feet from the balcony of their room at the Leonardo Royal hotel in Frankfurt. Christian M. initially told authorities that his wife had fallen over the railing while they were engaged in sexual activity. However, investigators found that the evidence at the scene did not support his account.

The investigation spanned nearly two years, during which Christian M. was living with his mistress near Frankfurt. He was arrested in the spring of 2025. A 20-day trial commenced on April 1, 2026, at the regional court.

During the trial, prosecutors argued that Christian M.'s mistress had pressured him to leave his wife, leading him to research methods of killing online. Evidence presented included his Google searches for poisonous herbs, legally purchasable weapons, the effects of sedatives, and inheritance law. He had also reportedly ordered a sedative online and, in the days leading up to the murder, searched for tall mountains with deep precipices and hotels with balconies.

The court determined that Christian M. had booked the hotel room the day before the murder, telling his wife, who was aware of his affair, that he wished to reconcile. He specifically requested a room on an upper floor. Investigators suggested this idea might have been inspired by an episode of the television series 'CSI: Vegas,' which featured a similar scenario.

The judge stated that Christian M. had found online information suggesting that a fall from a great height could be difficult to distinguish from an accident. CCTV footage showed Marta visibly intoxicated after the couple spent Father's Day together in Frankfurt before returning to the hotel. The judge noted that Marta did not appear to be seeking intense sexual activity but rather seemed to need sleep.

Guests reported hearing a loud scream followed by cries of distress from the couple's room approximately 13 minutes after they returned. Marta's body was later found on the ground, partially undressed, with injuries to her elbows that predated her death.

In delivering the verdict, the presiding judge declared there was no doubt Christian M. had murdered his wife, describing his actions as "morally reprehensible" and stating he had "disposed of" her "like a garbage bag." The judge added that it could have been a perfect crime had authorities not investigated so meticulously.

Marta's family members, including her parents who served as joint plaintiffs, were present for the verdict. Christian M. has been ordered to pay 35,000 euros in compensation to his wife's family and his children for their loss.
