A 72-year-old British man was killed and his 73-year-old wife seriously injured when their vintage car went off a scenic road in Italy's Chianti region. The incident occurred on Friday afternoon near Castellina in the province of Siena.
The couple had attended a vintage car show and were traveling along the SR429 from Poggibonsi when the driver reportedly lost control of their red convertible. The vehicle spun off the road and overturned, sustaining significant damage. Emergency services responded to the scene, but the man was pronounced dead shortly after 1 p.m.
His wife, also British, survived the crash with serious injuries and was airlifted by helicopter to Le Scotte Hospital in Siena under a 'code red' emergency status. Her current condition is unknown.
Authorities are investigating the exact circumstances that led to the accident. The area has experienced other traffic incidents recently; a separate crash involving three cars occurred just days prior, injuring one man. In June, a separate fatal incident in northern Italy resulted in the deaths of three teenagers when their car crashed into a canal near Milan.
