A 34-year-old British man has died after encountering trouble while swimming near Marathonisi in Laganas, a popular tourist area on the Greek island of Zakynthos, also known as Zante. The incident occurred on Tuesday.
Bystanders alerted authorities when they observed the man in distress. Port authority officers and other beachgoers assisted in bringing him to shore, where immediate resuscitation efforts and first aid were administered. He was subsequently transported by patrol boat to the port of Agios Sostis and then taken to the General Hospital of Zakynthos.
He was later pronounced dead at the hospital. The Zakynthos Port Authority has launched a preliminary investigation into the incident, and a post-mortem examination will be conducted. A spokesperson for the Port Authority confirmed the details of the event, stating that the authority was alerted to a foreigner in difficulty, assisted by beachgoers, and subsequently transported to the hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
