An 88-year-old British man and his dog died Saturday after their car caught fire and became trapped on a dirt road in Avgorou, a southeastern region of Cyprus. The man was on his way to visit a dog shelter approximately 138 kilometers (86 miles) from his home in Pachna.
His body was discovered outside the passenger door of the white car after the fire was controlled by emergency services. The dog also perished in the blaze. The cause of the fire is understood to have originated from a blaze in nearby reed beds, which ignited from sparks from the car after it became stuck in mud. The man had been accompanied by a care worker, who managed to escape the vehicle. According to her statement to police, she urged the man to leave the car, but he instructed her to seek help instead.
Police are investigating the incident, as reported by Cyprus Mail.
