A British family's holiday in Cyprus has turned into a tragedy after their two-year-old son died falling from a fourth-floor hotel window. The father, a 37-year-old banking executive, has been detained by Cypriot police on suspicion of causing death through negligence, reckless and dangerous actions.
Friends close to the family have insisted the incident was a terrible accident, occurring in a split second. They described the father propping the boy on a window ledge momentarily while waiting for a lift. The window is protected by a tall, glass, sliding pane, which can be difficult to determine at first glance if it is open.
The family had arrived at the five-star King Evelthon Beach Hotel and Resort in Chlorakas early Sunday morning after a late-night flight from London. The boy's maternal grandparents were also present to help care for the children. After a day by the pool, the family returned to their room to prepare for dinner.
The incident occurred as the father, son, and father-in-law were heading to the lift. The family source stated, "The little boy slipped out of his dad's arms. He wasn't sat up there for ages. It happened within seconds. He would never put his son at risk, ever."
Emergency services were called, and the boy was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. The father was subsequently taken to a police station and arrested that evening.
Despite cooperating fully with authorities and providing witness statements and CCTV footage, the father was placed in front of a judge and remanded in custody. His lawyer, Petros Stavrou, has pleaded for his client's release, citing the severe psychological distress the detention is causing him and his family. He emphasized that there is no legal or humanitarian necessity for the father to remain in custody.
The family has been trying to shield their five-year-old daughter from the full reality of her brother's death, initially telling her he was in the hospital. They eventually had to inform her via FaceTime while the father was in his cell.
Friends describe the parents as a loving couple who had struggled to start a family before their daughter's birth in 2021 and their son's in September 2023. They had recently celebrated their tenth wedding anniversary.
While in detention, the father has reportedly received kindness from both prison officers and inmates, who apparently recognize he is not a criminal. However, he has also received psychological assistance and medication to help him sleep.
Meanwhile, the father's wife has reportedly received no support from the police welfare team or visits from British Embassy staff. The family is being assisted by undertakers to repatriate their toddler's body. The father is awaiting a decision from the Cypriot attorney general regarding potential criminal charges. Authorities have stated that further investigations are required, including the pending toxicology report, meaning the father will remain in custody until at least Monday.
