Spanish police are investigating the deaths of a British-based couple, identified as Thomasina McArdle, 51, and her husband Patrick Tobin, 45, who were found deceased beside a hot tub at their luxury villa in Cullera on Spain's east coast. The couple, who had lived and worked in London for several years, were discovered by their two teenage sons on Tuesday afternoon.

According to Spanish Civil Guard investigators, the prevailing theory is that Ms. McArdle may have lost consciousness due to a medical emergency or a substance in the hot tub, and Mr. Tobin died while attempting to rescue her. Post-mortem examinations have ruled out foul play, and no signs of forced entry or suspicious activity were detected on nearby CCTV cameras.

Investigators noted marks and scratches on both bodies, along with blood in the hot tub's water and a strong chemical odor, according to the Valencia newspaper Las Provincias. The Civil Guard is exploring possibilities including a fatal electric shock from a faulty hot tub or poisoning from toxic fumes. They are also considering the possibility that Mr. Tobin suffered a heart attack due to the exertion and stress of the rescue attempt.

Toxicology reports are expected to provide further clarity on whether Ms. McArdle experienced a medical incident related to gases or other substances within the hot tub. Ms. McArdle, originally from County Monaghan, Ireland, had worked as a quantity surveyor in the high-end hotel industry in London for over five years. Mr. Tobin was reportedly employed in the tech industry in London.

The couple's teenage sons, aged 14 and 16, who are understood to have special needs, raised the alarm with a neighbor after searching the villa for their parents. Relatives of Ms. McArdle arrived in Spain late Wednesday to support the children. Three relatives, including an uncle, traveled to be with the teenagers. The Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed it is providing consular assistance, and New Zealand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs is assisting Mr. Tobin's relatives.
