Wildfires sweeping across Indonesia have devastated portions of the natural habitat for hundreds of orangutans, raising serious concerns about the species' survival. The fires, particularly intense in Borneo and Sumatra, have created a critical situation for the primates.

"The situation is quite critical," stated Karmele Llano Sanchez, CEO of the wildlife foundation Yayasan Inisiasi Alam Rehabilitasi Indonesia (YIARI). Sanchez noted that the fires are leaving the orangutans "without any food or water."

In response to the escalating crisis, Indonesian authorities have intensified efforts to contain the haze and control the wildfires across affected provinces. Efforts are underway to rescue and rehabilitate orangutans impacted by the fires. One weak orangutan found in Ketapang, West Kalimantan, on Borneo island, has been moved to a rehabilitation center. According to YIARI, the orangutan will receive treatment and will be released back into the wild after recovery.
