Authorities have found a body during the search for George Smyth, a British student who went missing while hiking in Romania's Bucegi Mountain Range. Smyth was last heard from when he contacted rescuers to report being disoriented and physically exhausted.
At the time of his last contact, rescuers indicated Smyth was in a remote and difficult-to-access mountainous area. Severe weather conditions, including strong winds, heavy snowfall, and dense fog, were reported in the region.
Smyth, a former student at Haberdashers' Adams in Newport, was described by the school as a "much-loved and cherished former student." His rugby club, Newport (Salop) RUFC, where he was a valued member, had been actively following and sharing updates on the search efforts. The club noted Smyth's dedication, stating he had grown up through their junior section and had coached younger age groups.
Following the discovery, police confirmed that forensic investigations will be conducted to confirm the identity of the body. Subsequently, efforts will be made to repatriate the remains to Bristol. George's family expressed gratitude to all those who assisted in the search, particularly those in Romania, and requested privacy during their time of grief.
