At least 47 people died when a boat capsized Thursday in a river in Nigeria’s northwestern Sokoto state. The boat was carrying passengers to farms for work in Gorau town, located in the Goronyo local government area.

Among the victims were many women and children. Samaila Garba, a resident, reported counting 42 bodies and identified his 13-year-old granddaughter, Jamila Usman, as one of the deceased.

Abdulkadir Yusuf, Sokoto state manager for the National Inland Waterways Authority, confirmed the incident and the death toll.
