A baby boy was born in the dark beside a collapsed building in Venezuela, an event being hailed as a miracle and a symbol of hope for a country grappling with significant earthquake damage. The delivery occurred in the coastal city of La Guairá, the area most affected by back-to-back earthquakes that struck the nation on Wednesday.
Video footage shows Dr. María Fernanda Terán delivering the newborn on the pavement as his mother lay nearby. A bystander assisted Terán by supporting the infant, and another person later provided additional covering for the mother. The mother, whose identity has not been released, was reportedly rescued from a damaged building and taken to a safety zone where she began labor. Local reports indicate that both the baby and the mother are in good condition.
Dr. Terán described the birth as one of the greatest challenges of her life, posting on social media, “Bringing a Baby to the world while the earth shakes in #laguairavenezuela is the greatest challenge of my life.”
The dual earthquakes, with magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5, caused widespread destruction along Venezuela's northern coast. Authorities reported that more than 900 people died and over 3,000 were injured. Approximately 3,000 individuals lost their homes, and at least 1,400 buildings sustained damage, including 13 hospitals and 25 commercial facilities. The tremors caused buildings to collapse in Caracas, the capital, and 15 other cities, leading to chaotic scenes as residents searched for loved ones.
In the midst of this devastation, the birth of the baby has offered a moment of solace and celebration, with many Venezuelans expressing pride in Dr. Terán and viewing the newborn as a sign of resilience. Comments on social media reflected sentiments of light amidst darkness and the existence of miracles even in times of misfortune.
