An Australian man has died while in immigration detention in Bali after overstaying his visa by 98 days. Cameron Hughes, 39, from Sydney, was found unresponsive by immigration officers on Friday night and died on the way to the hospital.
Hughes had been held at the Ngurah Rai Immigration Office and was awaiting deportation. Immigration officials reported that CCTV footage showed Hughes had been motionless for an extended period. Officers responded, found him unconscious, administered first aid and oxygen, and arranged for an ambulance.
He was transported to Bali Jimbaran General Hospital, but was pronounced dead en route. A preliminary assessment by the hospital indicated a suspected heart attack as a contributing factor.
The Ngurah Rai Immigration Office stated that a public complaint in March had alerted them to Hughes' alleged misuse of his stay permit. Hughes, who resided in Jimbaran, South Kuta, had been given opportunities to rectify his immigration status but did not, leading to his detainment.
The Head of the Ngurah Rai Immigration Office, Bugie Kurniawan, extended condolences to Hughes' family. The Indonesian National Police are currently investigating the circumstances of his death.
