An Australian truck driver, Simon Peter Carman, 45, has been arrested in Thailand and charged with murder following the discovery of a dismembered body stuffed into a suitcase. The victim has been identified as 17-year-old Tunchanok Donhomla.
Carman was apprehended Friday night at Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi International Airport as he attempted to board a flight to Perth, Australia. He faces multiple charges, including murder, concealment of a body, and taking a minor for sexual purposes, offenses that carry severe penalties in Thailand.
According to police, CCTV footage allegedly shows Carman holding hands with Ms. Donhomla as they entered an elevator, and later leaving the hotel with a black suitcase. The victim's body was found stuffed inside this suitcase near railway tracks in Jomtien, a coastal town near Pattaya. Ms. Donhomla had reportedly only arrived in Pattaya days before her death and was visiting the town for the first time.
Carman has denied the murder allegations, claiming he acted in self-defense. He told investigators that Ms. Donhomla had demanded more money and attempted to rob him. He stated that a knife was produced during the altercation. In a video released by police, Carman addressed Ms. Donhomla's family, expressing his regret and stating the events were "out of my control."
Friends of Carman in Australia have described him as a loner with an obsession for asserting dominance. One acquaintance noted that Carman frequently engaged in wrestling to show off. "He is a weirdo," one former friend told the Daily Mail. "He would always try to assert dominance in every situation."
Despite past speculation about cognitive abilities due to slow speech, a former mate clarified that Carman had a brain tumor removed as a child but functioned normally as an adult. He enjoyed hobbies such as camping, fishing, and dirt biking, and owned multiple firearms. This mate also suggested Carman's travels to Thailand were an attempt to find a wife, as he had "never had a girlfriend" in Australia.
Carman had been living on and off in Thailand for years, reportedly funding his lifestyle with a workers' compensation payout from a back injury sustained while driving trucks in Australia. He had returned to Thailand about a year ago after previously leaving due to COVID-19 border restrictions.
An ex-girlfriend in Thailand, who had briefly dated Carman before he returned to Australia, expressed shock and fear after hearing of the arrest. A friend of the woman stated that Carman had contacted her upon his return, but she had since married a local man. "She is scared by the news of that girl," the friend told the Daily Mail. "We can't believe how something like this can happen."
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is providing consular assistance to Carman. Ms. Donhomla's parents have traveled to Pattaya to retrieve their daughter's body and have rejected Carman's apology, seeking the maximum punishment under the law if he is found guilty.
