The dean of St. John's Cathedral in Brisbane, Australia, has retired after 18 years in the role, following controversy over his participation in a reality television show that featured OnlyFans creators filming inside the cathedral.
The Very Reverend Peter Catt announced his resignation on Thursday, taking responsibility for the cathedral's appearance in the Stan reality series "Turned On: Dirty Sexy Money." The show follows the lives of adult entertainers, with one episode focusing on U.K. OnlyFans creator Lily Phillips' attempt to reconnect with her Christian faith. Phillips participated in a religious ceremony led by Catt within the cathedral.
During the filming, members of the congregation, including children, were visible in several shots. Catt stated that his agreement with the production company was limited to his own participation, and he had not given permission for other members of the community to be filmed. He expressed deep regret that footage including congregants was included in the program when it first aired in June.
"It was my decision for the Cathedral to participate in a television show that was later named Turned On: Dirty Sexy Money," Catt said in a letter to the church, which was seen by the Courier Mail. "I come from a place of faith, love and acceptance and I believe everyone has the right to connect with their faith. But, I understand my decision has caused distress and concern within the faith community."
The production company, Mischief & Wonder, had previously claimed that permission to film inside the church was obtained directly from Catt. Following the incident, the footage was amended to blur the faces of visible churchgoers. Catt indicated that the producers had apologized and acknowledged their error, blurring or removing any individuals who were shown.
Archbishop Jeremy Greaves acknowledged that there were "a number of gaps" in the church's filming approval process, and the incident has prompted a review. Catt, who is currently on annual leave, is scheduled to conclude his duties as dean on September 27.
