More than 60 childcare centers operated by Ignite Minds in Victoria, Australia, have been ordered to shut down for 90 days following the discovery of serious safety concerns for children. Four educators employed by the company have also been suspended. The Victorian Early Childhood Regulatory Authority (VECRA) made the decision after uncovering multiple safety breaches, including a five-month-old child sleeping in a cot with items that posed a risk to their safety. Other identified failures included a child falling from a highchair, unsecured hazardous materials, and the absence of required medications for children with medical conditions.

The suspension, effective August 21, requires Ignite Minds to address the identified issues and ensure child safety before resuming operations. The VECRA conducted a three-day compliance blitz, dubbed Operation Flint, visiting 30 childcare residences as part of its assessment.

Regulators had previously communicated concerns to Ignite Minds regarding fencing, safe sleeping practices, and strangulation risks, and had previously taken enforcement action. However, the issues remained unresolved, contributing to the VECRA's decision to suspend the company's approval.

"It was clear to VECRA that this provider has failed the children and families who rely on its services, as well as the educators who worked for it," stated Victorian Early Childhood Regulator Wendy Steendam. "When families entrust their children to an early childhood education and care service, they expect that they will be safe and not exposed to hazards and dangers."

Steendam also issued a warning to other childcare providers, emphasizing the importance of compliance with safety requirements. "You must ensure your educators and their residences are compliant, and you must provide appropriate governance and leadership to your staff. If you don't, we will act," she said.
