At least 10 people were killed and more than 40 were injured after a freight train crashed into a double-decker passenger bus on Monday morning in central Mexico, state authorities said.
The collision occurred as the bus, operated by the Herradura de Plata company, was attempting to enter an industrial zone south of the Atlacomulco area, outside Mexico City. CCTV footage shown by local media appears to show the bus being struck while crossing a railway line.
The State of Mexico attorney general's office reported that seven women and three men were among the dead. Dozens of injured passengers were pulled from the wreckage and taken to nearby hospitals, with some in severe condition, officials said. Images from the scene show extensive damage to the bus, including missing sections of the roof, a shattered front windscreen and damage to the rear.
The freight train was operated by Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC). In a statement, the company expressed condolences to the victims' families and urged drivers to respect railroad stop signs to "avoid these tragic situations." CPKC and the bus company are cooperating with local authorities investigating the circumstances of the crash.
Local emergency services and investigators were on site following the impact. Officials did not immediately release a precise timeline of events beyond saying the crash occurred on Monday morning. Authorities are examining the footage and interviewing witnesses as part of the ongoing probe.
Mexico has seen several fatal bus crashes this year. In May, at least 21 people died in a collision involving a bus, a tanker truck and a van in central Mexico. In February, at least 41 people were killed in a separate bus accident in the southern state of Tabasco, according to government reports.
Authorities did not provide an updated official death toll beyond the initial figure, and hospital officials said they were treating a number of patients with serious injuries. Investigators from the State of Mexico's attorney general's office are continuing to collect evidence to determine the cause of the crash and whether safety protocols were followed at the railway crossing.
