An airline worker was apprehended at Melbourne Airport on Thursday after allegedly attempting to import approximately 1 kilogram of heroin, with an estimated street value of $500,000.

The Thai national, 26, was reportedly performing duties on an international flight when she arrived and submitted her baggage for scanning. Australian Border Force (ABF) officers detected irregularities during the scan, which led to a discovery of a white powder hidden within the lining of an embroidered textile bag. Subsequent testing confirmed the substance to be heroin.

Following the discovery, the woman was transferred to the Australian Federal Police (AFP), who subsequently arrested and charged her with importing and possessing a marketable quantity of a border-controlled drug. The alleged incident occurred on June 25, 2026.

ABF Commander Clint Sims stated that individuals will face charges regardless of their position to ensure the enforcement of drug importation laws. "The ABF remains alert to the threat of trusted insiders and will continue to identify and disrupt this activity to maintain the integrity of our border and protect the Australian community," Commander Sims said.

AFP Acting Commander Simone Butcher emphasized the police force's vigilance regarding individuals who exploit their employment or community standing to facilitate drug trafficking. "We work closely with our partner agencies to protect the community from the scourge of illicit drugs," she stated.
