Police in the Netherlands arrested 34 suspects on Tuesday after a fatal shooting and an attack that wounded two police officers in the rural village of Overasselt. The incident, which involved an estimated 30 masked individuals, is being investigated as a potential gangland attack.
The shooting occurred in the early hours of the morning in Overasselt, a village located approximately 135 kilometers (85 miles) southeast of Amsterdam. Following the incident, police urged residents to remain indoors while they conducted their investigation. The two injured police officers were taken to a hospital, though details about their injuries were not immediately released.
Security camera footage, broadcast by the Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf, reportedly shows around 30 individuals, many wearing ski masks and carrying weapons, walking down a street before fleeing the scene after what appears to be a shooting. Police confirmed that the analysis of this video imagery is part of their ongoing investigation.
Mayor Joerie Minses described the event as "a form of extreme violence that is completely unacceptable" that had shaken the village. National police chief Janny Knol stated on X that officers from across the country were involved in the investigation and had apprehended a "large number" of suspects, referring to the violence as "unprecedented."
Prosecutors and police have not commented on a possible motive for the attack. The 34 individuals detained include people identified as being from the Netherlands, France, Belgium, and Algeria. Their identities have not been released, and no charges have been announced.
The Netherlands has become a significant transit point for cocaine, contributing to a violent underworld driven by criminal gangs. These gangs are also reportedly major producers of synthetic drugs within the country.
