A 13-year-old girl was arrested after allegedly throwing a shopping trolley over a railing at a Chatswood shopping centre on Monday, striking a man on the ground floor and injuring him, New South Wales police said.
The incident occurred at about 11:50 a.m. on Victoria Avenue in Chatswood, on Sydney’s lower north shore. The trolley fell from an upper level and struck a 59-year-old man who was walking below. Paramedics treated the man for head and facial injuries before he was taken to Royal North Shore Hospital in a stable condition.
Police arrested the 13-year-old at the scene and took her to Chatswood Police Station, where she is assisting officers with their inquiries, police said. A crime scene was established and the trolley was seized to undergo forensic examination.
Police did not immediately disclose whether any charges had been laid. The investigation remains ongoing as detectives conduct inquiries and examine evidence recovered from the scene.
The shopping centre is a busy retail hub on Victoria Avenue. Authorities advised anyone with information or relevant footage of the incident to contact local police. Further updates were expected as inquiries continue and forensic results become available.
