A young black bear was tranquilized and safely recovered by wildlife officers on Sunday after falling from a tree in Denver, Colorado. The incident occurred near Louisiana Avenue and Pennsylvania Street.
Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) responded to the bear's presence in the urban area. Officers utilized tranquilizers and, working in conjunction with the Denver Police Department, managed to catch the animal as it descended. CPW reported that the bear sustained no injuries during the roughly 100-foot fall.
The bear, identified as a approximately 1.5-year-old male yearling weighing around 100 pounds, was subsequently transported to a more suitable habitat for release. Video shared by CPW showed the animal falling through tree branches before being secured on the ground.
This event comes amid a noted increase in bear activity and sightings in Colorado this year. CPW attributes this rise to drought conditions, which are diminishing natural food sources and compelling bears to venture into residential areas in search of sustenance. Between January 1 and August 13, CPW documented 6,129 reports of bear sightings and conflicts, a significant increase from the 3,115 reports during the same period in the previous year.
Wildlife officials are advising residents to take precautions to minimize bear encounters. Recommendations include securing trash until collection day, removing bird feeders, and ensuring cars and homes are locked to prevent bears from accessing potential food sources. Officials also noted that bear activity may increase as the animals prepare for winter and build fat reserves.
