The New York Yankees have designated Oswaldo Cabrera, a long-tenured and well-regarded player within the organization, for assignment. The move, made on Wednesday, creates an open spot on the 40-man roster for the activation of pitcher Clarke Schmidt from the 60-day injured list.
Cabrera, 27, has spent most of the current season at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, recovering from a severe broken ankle sustained last May. Despite his time in the minor league system, he played three games for the Yankees this season. He had been part of the organization since 2016 and made his Major League debut in 2022.
His performance at Triple-A this year included a .288 batting average and a .790 OPS. Cabrera still has an additional minor league option available after this season, which could enhance his value to other teams. The move was considered surprising given his history and performance metrics.
