Paulette Thompson, the widow of slain UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, came face-to-face with Luigi Mangione, her husband's killer, for the first time in court. Mangione, 28, pleaded guilty to federal stalking charges, admitting to shooting Thompson, 50, at point-blank range in Manhattan in December 2024.

Paulette Thompson, a physical therapist, attended the hearing, seated with other family members. She appeared stoic in sunglasses, though she reportedly sobbed silently during Mangione's confession. Mangione, dressed in jail garb, did not make eye contact with the widow or her relatives.

Following the plea, the Thompson family released a statement calling the guilty plea a critical step toward justice. "Today’s guilty plea marks an important step toward justice for Brian and for our family," the statement read. "While nothing will ease the pain of losing him, we are grateful that the federal justice system has held the person responsible for this heinous act accountable."

The family expressed their hope that sentencing will reflect the severity of the crime and noted that additional proceedings in New York and Pennsylvania are still pending. They affirmed their commitment to continuing to seek justice for Brian Thompson.

Mangione confessed in court that he shot Mr. Thompson because he believed the health insurance system had failed him and ruined his life, stemming from years of severe back pain. He now faces a potential sentence of life in prison. He is also awaiting a state court trial, where he is attempting to argue double jeopardy.

Thompson, a father of two, led the health insurance company UnitedHealthcare. His killing has drawn attention from individuals who have expressed support for Mangione, attributing their actions to anger over the American healthcare system. These supporters have been observed at court appearances, with one individual shouting, "America Loves Luigi!"
