The White House's attempt to join in on Nickelodeon's #SpongeBobDay celebration on X, formerly Twitter, drew swift criticism after it posted an edited image of the beloved cartoon character. The image depicted SpongeBob SquarePants wearing a hat emblazoned with the "MAGA" slogan, a reference to former President Donald Trump's political movement.
The edited SpongeBob wore a hat from the Season 3 episode "One Krabs Trash," but instead of its original design, it featured Trump's slogan. Critics pointed out the irony and perceived inappropriateness of co-opting the children's character for political messaging.
Some social media users edited the image further, with one alteration showing the hat with the "Fuck MAGA" slogan. Others argued that SpongeBob's core character traits—kindness, empathy, inclusion, environmentalism, and helping others—are fundamentally at odds with the MAGA platform, making him an unsuitable mascot.
Further mocking of the White House post emerged over the decision to watermark the image, which was based on a Nickelodeon cartoon. A significant point of criticism highlighted by fans was the episode's central joke: the coveted hat ultimately proves to be worthless. This detail led many to believe the White House's post, by using this specific image, unintentionally highlighted the perceived lack of value or substance associated with the MAGA slogan.
