A U.S. F-15 pilot, who was shot down over Iran in April, has reported encountering a cluster of drones moving in a synchronized, "jellyfish-like" formation prior to his aircraft crashing. The pilot successfully ejected and was later rescued.
A source described the formation to CNN as "multiple drones interconnected and moving as one with smaller drones below the bigger drones like legs," adding, "Real alien s***."
The pilot navigated approximately 70 miles over 36 hours in mountainous Iranian territory before a large-scale rescue operation extracted him. The operation involved 155 aircraft, including fighter jets, refueling tankers, and rescue aircraft.
There is no consensus within the intelligence community regarding the cause of the F-15's downing. Officials are reportedly uncertain how to assess the pilot's account, noting that a concussion sustained during the crash may have impacted his recollection.
This incident marks the second time this particular pilot was downed during the conflict with Iran; he was previously hit by friendly fire from Kuwaiti forces in early March.
The Rescue Operation
The rescue of the pilot and his weapons systems officer (WSO) involved a complex, multi-stage operation. Following the F-15's downing near Talkhuncheh, Isfahan Province, on April 3, both crew members ejected. The WSO, a lieutenant colonel, sustained injuries and became separated from the pilot. U.S. special forces attempted an initial rescue, but faced enemy fire, with two helicopters sustaining damage. The pilot was rescued, but the WSO could not be reached.
The WSO, utilizing his Survival, Evasion, Resistance, and Escape (SERE) training, evaded Iranian forces for more than 24 hours, hiking significant distances and gaining elevation. He activated his emergency beacon, which, while aiding rescuers, also risked exposing his location to Iranian forces.
Intelligence agencies, including the CIA, were involved in locating the officer and initiated a deception campaign to mislead Iranian search parties. Drones monitored the WSO's location, engaging Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps search teams. Ultimately, U.S. special forces, including SEAL Team 6, conducted a second extraction, successfully retrieving the WSO from a mountainside.
During the extraction, U.S. forces destroyed multiple aircraft, including two C-130s that became stuck at a desert landing strip, to prevent them from falling into enemy hands.
Drone Technology and UFO Interest
Reports suggest the observed drone formation could represent "one-to-many meshed networking," a capability allowing a single operator to control multiple drones simultaneously. While Russia and China are believed to possess this technology, Iran was not previously assessed as having it.
Former President Donald Trump lauded the rescue operation as a demonstration of "skill and precision, lethality and force." He highlighted the WSO's ability to activate a beacon, likening the search to finding "a needle in a haystack."
The pilot's unusual sighting coincides with the Trump administration's initiative to declassify information regarding alleged UFO sightings. Previous declassified reports include a 2023 sighting of a glowing orb and a May video allegedly showing a U.S. fighter jet destroying a UFO.
