A proposal from the left-wing Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) suggests targeting older individuals with a wealth tax to bolster public finances. The think tank argues that the current system is disproportionately burdensome on younger workers.

The IPPR's call for reform comes as Chancellor John Healey prepares for his first budget in October, facing significant spending pressures. Prime Minister Andy Burnham has also not ruled out the possibility of a wealth tax.

This proposition, if considered, could raise concerns among those who have accumulated wealth through savings and property ownership over their lifetimes. The IPPR contends that the existing tax structure places an undue emphasis on taxing income derived from employment, particularly affecting younger generations.
