The United Kingdom is experiencing its third heatwave of the year, with some areas recording 10 consecutive days of temperatures reaching or exceeding 30 degrees Celsius. The peak of the heatwave occurred on Thursday, July 9, and Friday, July 10, when temperatures climbed to 35 degrees Celsius. Although temperatures have slightly decreased since then, many locations, particularly in London such as Teddington, Richmond upon Thames, Kew Gardens, and Heathrow, have continued to see persistent highs above 30C.
A notable east to north-easterly wind has influenced the distribution of the highest temperatures, pushing them westward in recent days. However, as this wind is expected to ease, the heat is forecast to spread more widely, with temperatures anticipated to rise further. The heatwave conditions are also likely to be met in Scotland, Northern Ireland, and northern England.
Beyond the high temperatures, the current weather pattern is characterized by hot, dry conditions and exceptionally sunny days. Some locations have reported double the average number of sunshine hours typically recorded for this time of year, according to BBC Weather. This prolonged sunshine has contributed to the intensity and duration of the heatwave.
