Many parts of the United Kingdom are experiencing prolonged dry weather and are set to face another heatwave this week, with southern areas expected to see temperatures reach up to 35C (95F).
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued heat health alerts for several regions, including the south-west, south-east, London, East of England, West and East Midlands, and Yorkshire and The Humber. These alerts will be in effect from Tuesday, July 28, to Friday, July 31. The agency warns that the extreme heat could lead to minor impacts on health and social care services and poses an increased risk to vulnerable individuals.
While some northern and western parts of the UK received rainfall over the weekend, with further showers anticipated, southern regions are forecast to remain dry. These southern areas, which have experienced the least rainfall, are particularly vulnerable to rising temperatures. Parts of Wales have already been officially declared to be in drought, and sections of southern, central, and eastern England are still classified as experiencing "prolonged dry weather," the stage immediately preceding a drought declaration.
The recurring heatwaves and low rainfall throughout the summer have contributed to the increasingly dry conditions across much of the country. The upcoming heatwave is expected to further exacerbate these environmental challenges.
