Two individuals died when an AH-64 Apache attack helicopter crashed in a field south of Salado, Texas, on Wednesday afternoon, sparking a significant wildfire and leading to evacuations of nearby residents. The helicopter originated from the U.S. Army base at Fort Hood, located approximately 30 minutes away.
Authorities responded to the crash site around 1:34 p.m., discovering the two deceased individuals inside the aircraft, according to Cliff Coleman, spokesman for the Bell County Sheriff's Office. No other injuries were reported. The identities of the deceased have not yet been released, as Fort Hood officials stated the situation is ongoing.
Brigadier General Ethan Diven, acting commanding general, said, "Our immediate priority is securing the site and supporting the initial response efforts. Our thoughts are with the crew and their families as we await further information."
The crash ignited a large wildfire in the area. The Salado Fire/Bell County ESD #1 reported crews were actively battling a "major grass fire" and advised the public that FM 2843 was impassable, urging motorists to avoid the area and choose alternate routes to allow emergency personnel clear access. Drivers were also cautioned against traveling near the scene or around responding emergency vehicles.
Fort Hood is leading the investigation into the cause of the helicopter crash.
