President Donald Trump's job approval rating has fallen to a record low of 33%, according to a new Reuters/Ipsos poll, with 64% of respondents disapproving of his performance. This rating ties his previous lowest point in December 2017.

The flagging approval comes as an ongoing war in Iran, which began in February with the stated goal of dismantling the country's nuclear weapons program, continues to impact the global economy and American households. Eighty percent of those polled expect the conflict to last for an extended period.

The war has significantly affected global oil supply routes, particularly through the Strait of Hormuz, where one-fifth of the world's oil passes. This has led to a substantial increase in national average gas prices, which have risen from just under $3 per gallon to over $4 per gallon since the conflict's inception, according to American Automobile Association (AAA) data.

Trump has defended the price increases, stating that paying slightly more for gas is acceptable and that he acted appropriately. He has also pointed to his administration's economic policies, including tax cuts and deregulation, as reasons for economic strength. White House spokesperson Olivia Wales stated that the administration is "cleaning up Joe Biden’s mess" and that "the United States of America has never been stronger."

However, inflation has also seen a marked increase, with year-over-year inflation rising from 2.4% in February to 3.4% currently, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Democrats are leveraging these economic concerns and the public's disapproval of the Iran war, which only 35% of Americans support, in their efforts to gain control of the House and Senate in the upcoming midterm elections.
